The story of WORKS by JD — and the philosophy that's guided every project since Jesse DeBenedictis founded the company in Beverly, MA in 2001.
Jesse DeBenedictis grew up in Beverly and started working construction jobs in high school — framing, siding, general labor. By his mid-20s he was running crews for larger general contractors across the North Shore, managing projects that ranged from historic restorations in Rockport to new construction in Hamilton.
What he noticed, project after project, was a recurring pattern: homeowners were getting burned by the disconnect between what they'd been designed and what was being built. Architects drew beautiful plans. General contractors hired out the work. Nobody owned the outcome. Jesse believed there was a better way.
At 30 years old, Jesse founded WORKS by JD with four core commitments: design and build everything under one roof, never hire out labor he couldn't personally vouch for, be transparent with homeowners about cost and schedule, and stand behind the work with a warranty that meant something.
The first year was kitchens and bathrooms — the kind of focused, craftsman-level work where you can't hide behind scale. Projects took longer than clients expected, but they looked exactly like what was designed, cost exactly what was quoted, and nothing needed to be fixed after punch-out. Word spread fast on the North Shore.
As the company grew through referrals, Jesse hired designers, project managers, and field leads who matched his standards — not just his schedule. He pursued his NARI certifications not for marketing purposes, but because the coursework and knowledge testing made him a better contractor. CRPM, CR, CKBR, and CLC followed over a decade of continuing education.
The 7-Year Workmanship Warranty — industry standard is typically one year — was formalized in this period. Jesse's position: if we build it right, we can stand behind it for seven years. If we're not willing to do that, we shouldn't build it at all.
Today WORKS by JD is the North Shore's premier Design-Build remodeler, completing projects from Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea to Gloucester, Rockport, Ipswich, Tewksbury, and beyond. Every project still gets Jesse's direct involvement. The client portal launched in 2019 brought the transparency that homeowners had always wanted into a system that scales without losing the personal touch.
The philosophy hasn't changed since 2001. It just has more evidence behind it.
